Tywin is an extremely demanding father, brother and liege-lord; he is seldom satisfied, and never pleased. He is respected, feared and admired, so his demanding nature often brings out the best in the people around him. As Hand of the King to Aerys Targaryen, the Mad King, he brought peace and plenty to the seven kingdoms. But what Tywin gives graciously with his left hand he can take mercilessly with his right hand - House Tarbeck and House Castamere having suffered his wrath when he was just a young lion.

He never acts without thinking every possibility through, preferring to calculate every outcome first before acting. He is callous and cold, but not intentionally cruel. Still, he knows that sometimes, in order to achieve total victory, many sacrifices must be made.

He constantly thinks several moves ahead, and has to put people right, especially his family, in order for the name Lannister to be feared and respected, meaning that he would do anything for his family if they were in trouble.

As a boy, Tywin watched his father Tytos mishandle the Lannister fortune and nearly ruin the family. After becoming Lord of the house, Tywin set about restoring the Lannisters to glory and prominence in a relentless fashion.
Tywin immediately set about bringing the Lannister bannermen into line, and wiped out House Tarbeck of Tarbeck Hall and House Reyne of Castamere for their defiance, leaving their ruined and shattered castles as a mute testimony to the fate that awaits those who scorn the power of Casterly Rock. Lannister wealth increased under Tywin's stewardship, and the Lannisters were the chief source of finance for King Robert during his reign.
Tywin's marriage was a solid one, and his love for the late Joanna Lannister is the subject of much hushed discussion years later. She gave him several children before she died, it has been noted that Tywin has never smiled since her death and lays the blame for her death at the feet of his son Tyrion, whom he has mixed feelings for. He raised them with cool detachment and harsh words but it was all for the greater good, he needed his family to make the correct choices and not bring shame to the family name.
He served the Mad King Aerys Targaryen as Hand of the King, but left his service when Aerys saw fit to take Tywin's son into the King's Guard against his father's wishes.
